My new scooter!

After two days waiting impatiently for the department of licensing to open, Monday is finally here at last. At 2pm I get the phone call from Scootamoto to say that my new scooter is licensed and ready to go!

I had arranged to pick up my scooter from the EMC Australia warehouse (the Australian e-max distributor) as they are closer than going all the way across town to Scootamoto. When I get there I speak to Adam who has the scooter waiting for me. He tells me that the batteries have yet to be charged from the factory, and so the performance may not be as good as the ones I test rode earlier until it is charged. All I need to do though is drive it around and run it down bit and then put it on a full charge overnight, and it should be in full form by tomorrow morning. Sweet!

Go Silver Sovereign!

The first thing I noticed is how much I like the look of the silver paint. The silver front, body and skirt matches perfectly with the silver metal of the suspension springs, the controller box and the drive motor. With the word "ELECTRIC" stencilled on the side and my matching silver helmet it sure looks the part of the electric vehicle future!

Looking at the dash, the battery indicator is sitting on about two thirds, as it has yet to have the first proper charge. Having only just been removed from the shipping box and licence plated up, the odometer has a nice clean reading of 0.2. Time to go for a ride!

Speed limiter woes

I take the scooter for a quick test spin around the block and everything feels fine, although I immediately notice the effect of the 45kph speed limiter, with the scooter peaking out at about 43kph on the dial. Acceleration up until this speed is fine, but being electronically limited, it wont voluntarily go above this without some serious downhill gravity assistance!

If you know how, it is a simple 10 minute operation to unscrew the motor controller box and remove the speed restriction chip. This operation can be done by your e-max scooter retailer, or even by yourself if you have a screwdriver and someone has shown you how. I don't know what the legality of doing this is, but I can't imagine it is any different to squeezing out extra power from a regular petrol bike with an enhanced exhaust or performance air filter.

I personally think it is actually far safer to have the speed limiter removed, especially if you have to ride in any kind of traffic. Motorists tend to get very impatient if you putt along at 45kph in a 60kph zone, and impatient drivers tend to do stupid things. I think it is far better to be able to cruise along at 55 or 60kph than have someone nudge you along with their front bumper!

As a bonus, Scootamoto offered to do this modification for free, so I resolve to make a visit to them as soon as I get the chance.

The other issue I noticed on the first ride was that the indicator switch would for some reason not stay on when pushed to the right, yet would work fine on the left. The guys in the workshop had not seen this on any other scooter but they quickly resolve to fix it by replacing the switch. In the meantime I have to get back to the office, so I am loaned a black e-max temporarily until I can return later in the afternoon.

Impressing friends!

In the evening we had several people over for dinner, and of course everyone was intrigued to have a go on the new scooter. What impressed everyone the most was how quiet it is - you really can sneak up on people if they are not expecting it! A couple of the guys commented on how zippy it felt - they really were not expecting to get that feeling from an electric bike. The e-max scooter is also a great conversation point, with most people impressed at the potential cost savings that can be made by running an electric vehicle.

Yes I had it de-restricted after about a week. Now the scooter is capable of a max speed of 62 kph with the turbo on and about 56 kph in normal mode. This makes it much more acceptable for driving in normal traffic.
